How does Telemidi work?

Telemidi represents the unification of creativity and technology; it harnesses music performance actions as MIDI data (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), and transmits this across the Internet in a regulated manner to reduce latency and coordinate synchronicity. This mode of engagement is known as Telematic Music Performance (TMP), where musicians from anywhere on earth may connect and co-create music in real-time.

Telemidi’s unique approach to share MIDI performance data, enables the simultaneous generation of hi-fidelity audio at each location, and bypasses the need to transmit bandwidth-heavy audio files that are prone to the destructive influence of latency.

The added beauty of this process, is that MIDI data may also be harnessed to generate visual activity, wherein musical actions are visualised in immersive VR environments. This nexus of artistic expression is limited only by the infinite imagination of your creative mind.

Crafting Seamless Connection

Music is explicitly bound to time; through rhythm, form and cooperation. If latency and delays are apparent, it disrupts the delicate timing of music and dissolves the collaborative essence of this ancient, social artform. When transmitting data over the Internet, latency issues are abundant, acting as a monolithic obstruction for previous attempts at TMP.

Telemidi overcomes this with Latency Accepting Solutions (LAS), as developed through the PhD research of founder Matt Bray. LAS supports a lateral approach to music making by accepting the limitations of the Internet, while enhancing its affordances.
