The Telemidi Vision, Mission, and the Team Making It Happen

Telemidi Web Design Element

Our vision is that every human, no matter their location, can experience the joy and power of co-creating music in real time.

Our mission is to make this possible—by developing remote systems that connect people through music, across distance, culture, and technology.

We are living through a transformation in what it means to “go live”. In fact, the very idea of “liveness” is under critical review. As Philip Auslander notes, “the word ‘live’ refers to a historical position, rather than an ontological condition” (Auslander, 2005). Today, the experience of live performance is deeply shaped—and often entirely determined—by digital mediation and audience perception.

Who Decides What Is Live?

Contrary to traditional belief, it is not the performer’s presence or virtuosity that ultimately defines liveness. It is the audience—and their conviction in the authenticity of the moment. As explored in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, reality can be constructed through partial representation, as long as the audience accepts what they perceive to be real (Oberly, 2021). This is especially relevant in Telematic Music Performance (TMP), where mediated signals, simulations, and non-human actors construct a new kind of reality: one that is partial, digital, and yet deeply affective.

Live performance is no longer tied to physical proximity. Auslander later expands that liveness can emerge from “a sense of continuous, technologically mediated temporal co-presence with others known and unknown” (Auslander, 2012). This understanding of telepresence is core to what we’re building at Telemidi: an ecosystem where people feel the intimacy of shared creation across physical and digital space.

Telemidi’s Approach to Digital Liveness

Through our patent-pending system (PCT/AU2025/050241), Telemidi enables stable musical interaction across vast latencies (up to and beyond 300ms), using loop-alignment strategies, remote server (RS) deployment, and grid-based MIDI interfaces like the Novation Launchpad. This makes our system ideal not only for remote musical collaboration, but for use in music education, therapy, gaming, and online wellness services.

The spectacular Rwanda–Canada performance using our TMP system stands as a vivid example. A choir in Kigali controlled pipe organs in snow-covered Canadian churches—coordinated through digital signal flow alone. Though separated by continents and cultures, what mattered most was how the audience perceived the performance: emotionally resonant, synchronised, and undeniably live.

The Simulacrum and the Rise of Hyperreal Performance

Digital mediation renders TMP artworks as both artistic products and simulacra, challenging previous definitions of live music. As Umberto Eco argues in Travels in Hyperreality, simulacra generate illusions that stimulate demand, and may replace original forms as the dominant experience (Eco, 1983). TMP’s immersive artefacts—its blend of real-time audio, reactive visuals, and controlled latency—position it as a frontier of hyperreal music performance, where liveness is not a fact but an affect.

Audiences are already accustomed to digital liveness in music through streaming. The IFPI’s 2024 Global Music Report shows that 67.3% of the $28.6 billion USD in recorded music revenue came from digital streaming (IFPI, 2024, p. 11). This demonstrates that digitally mediated music is culturally relevant and deeply valued, despite not being “live” in the traditional sense.

The Team Leading the Charge

Telemidi is led by a dedicated team of professionals committed to revolutionizing live music performance:

– Simon Tsapepas – Corporate Legal

Together, they guide Telemidi with a commitment to cultural nuance, technical excellence, and social impact.

A Live Future, Reimagined

As digital interfaces, algorithms, and remote systems become embedded in our daily lives, the concept of liveness will continue to shift. Telemidi is not clinging to tradition—we’re embracing a seamful, inclusive, and human-centred future for live music.

Because liveness isn’t just where you are. It’s who you’re with, and how deeply you feel it.
